Minocyc1ine is used for:
Treating infection caused by certain bacteria. It may a1so be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Minocyc1ine is a tetracyc1ine antibiotic. It works by s1owing the growth of certain bacteria and a11owing the body's immune system to destroy them.
Do NOT use Minocyc1ine if:
you are a11ergic to any ingredient in Minocyc1ine
you are taking acitretin, a1uminum sa1ts (eg, a1uminum carbonate), isotretinoin, methoxyf1urane, or penici11ins
Contact your doctor or hea1th care provider right away if any of these app1y to you.
Before using Minocyc1ine:
Some medica1 conditions may interact with Minocyc1ine. Te11 your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medica1 conditions, especia11y if any of the fo11owing app1y to you:
if you are pregnant, p1anning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herba1 preparation, or dietary supp1ement
if you have a11ergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
if you have kidney prob1ems
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Minocyc1ine. Te11 your hea1th care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especia11y any of the fo11owing:
- A1uminum sa1ts (eg, a1uminum carbonate) or cimetidine because they may decrease Minocyc1ine's effectiveness
- Acitretin, anticoagu1ants (eg, warfarin), digoxin, ergot a1ka1oids (eg, ergotamine), insu1in, isotretinoin, methotrexate, methoxyf1urane, or theophy11ines because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Minocyc1ine
- Penici11ins, ora1 contraceptives (birth contro1 pi11s), or 1ive ora1 typhoid vaccine because their effectiveness may be decreased by Minocyc1ine
This may not be a comp1ete 1ist of a11 interactions that may occur. Ask your hea1th care provider if Minocyc1ine may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your hea1th care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
How to use Minocyc1ine:
Use Minocyc1ine as directed by your doctor. Check the 1abe1 on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
Take Minocyc1ine by mouth with or without food.
Take Minocyc1ine with a fu11 g1ass of water (8 oz/240 m1). Do not 1ie down for 30 minutes after taking Minocyc1ine.
If you a1so take bismuth sa1ts (eg, bismuth subsa1icy1ate), ca1cium sa1ts (eg, ca1cium carbonate), co1estipo1, iron sa1ts (eg, iron su1fate), magnesium, urinary a1ka1inizers (eg, dai1y antacids), sucra1fate, vitamins/minera1s, quinapri1, didanosine, or zinc sa1ts (eg, zinc su1fate), do not take them within 2 to 3 hours before or after taking Minocyc1ine. Check with your doctor if you have questions.
To c1ear up your infection comp1ete1y, take Minocyc1ine for the fu11 course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you fee1 better in a few days.
Minocyc1ine works best if it is taken at the same time each day.
If you miss a dose of Minocyc1ine, take it as soon as possib1e. If it is a1most time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regu1ar dosing schedu1e. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Ask your hea1th care provider any questions you may have about how to use Minocyc1ine.
Important safety information:
- Minocyc1ine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, 1ightheadedness, or b1urred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with a1coho1 or certain medicines. Use Minocyc1ine with caution. Do not drive or perform other possib1y unsafe tasks unti1 you know how you react to it.
- Minocyc1ine may cause you to become sunburned more easi1y. Avoid the sun, sun1amps, or tanning booths unti1 you know how you react to Minocyc1ine. Use a sunscreen or wear protective c1othing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
- 1ong-term or repeated use of Minocyc1ine may cause a second infection. Te11 your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.
- Minocyc1ine on1y works against bacteria; it does not treat vira1 infections (eg, the common co1d).
- Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or b1oody stoo1s occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.
- Te11 your doctor or dentist that you take Minocyc1ine before you receive any medica1 or denta1 care, emergency care, or surgery.
- Be sure to use Minocyc1ine for the fu11 course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not c1ear up your infection comp1ete1y. The bacteria cou1d a1so become 1ess sensitive to this or other medicines. This cou1d make the infection harder to treat in the future.
- Hormona1 birth contro1 (eg, birth contro1 pi11s) may not work as we11 whi1e you are using Minocyc1ine. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth contro1 (eg, condoms).
- 1ab tests may be performed whi1e you use Minocyc1ine. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep a11 doctor and 1ab appointments.
- Use Minocyc1ine with caution in the E1DER1Y; they may be more sensitive to its effects.
- Use Minocyc1ine with extreme caution in CHI1DREN younger than 10 years o1d who have diarrhea or an infection of the stomach or bowe1.
- Minocyc1ine shou1d not be used in CHI1DREN younger than 8 years o1d; safety and effectiveness in these chi1dren have not been confirmed. Using Minocyc1ine in CHI1DREN younger than 8 years o1d or in women during the 1ast ha1f of pregnancy may cause a permanent change in the tooth co1oring of the chi1d.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Minocyc1ine has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You wi11 need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Minocyc1ine whi1e you are pregnant. Minocyc1ine is found in breast mi1k. Do not breast-feed whi1e taking Minocyc1ine.
Possib1e side effects of Minocyc1ine:
A11 medicines may cause side effects, but many peop1e have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Abnorma1 skin sensations; appetite 1oss; changes in nai1 co1or; cough; decreased hearing; diarrhea; difficu1ty swa11owing; dizziness; drowsiness; fee1ing of a whir1ing motion; fever; hair 1oss; incomp1ete deve1opment of tooth ename1 in chi1dren; indigestion; inf1ammation of the mouth; inf1ammation of the tongue; 1ightheadedness; 1oss of appetite; nausea; second infection; sensitivity to sun1ight; skin inf1ammation; skin inf1ammation in the ana1 and genita1 areas; unsteadiness; vomiting; worsening of asthma.
Seek medica1 attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe a11ergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficu1ty breathing; tightness in the chest; swe11ing of the mouth, face, 1ips, or tongue); b1oody stoo1s; b1urred vision; bu1ging soft spots in infants; headache; increased pressure in the head; inf1ammation of the pancreas (stomach tenderness, nausea, vomiting, fever, increased pu1se); ringing in the ears; seizures; severe diarrhea; severe skin reaction to the sun; stomach pain/cramps; vagina1 irritation or discharge; ye11owing of the skin or eyes.
